GIS & DATA MANAGEMENT
A GIS is a computer system capable of
capturing, storing, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced
information; that is, data identified according to location.
Current technological trends in data
collection gave us the ability to utilize handheld GPS devices with the ability
to capture and edit live data using satellite connections. Our Land Surveyors
have been able to provide a high level of positional accuracy utilizing the
GPS-derived positions. This eliminates the need to post process, import, and
update the data in the office after fieldwork has been collected. This saves
cost, time and increased accuracy, and efficiency.
GIS allows us to view, understand,
question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships,
patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. It gives
us the ability to relate different sets of data in a spatial context and to
reach a conclusion about this relationship. We use Arc GIS to assist us in
analysing large amounts of data that inform the planning process.
